Hi David -

Dragonflies are commonly referred to as "mosquito hawks." The adults can eat hundreds of mosquitos, flies, and other types of insects every day. Dragonflies have a keen sense of vision. They often catch their prey in mid-flight, and proceed to eat them while flying. In addition, immature dragonflies, referred to as nymphs eat mosquito larvae. The name "dragonfly" comes not from their appearance, but from the strong jaws adults have for devouring prey.

Crane flies resemble large mosquitos, and are sometimes referred to as "mosquito hawks." However, these insects do not eat mosquitos. While harmless to humans, the larvae can cause significant damage to plants, grasses in particular.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, most species of dragonflies thrive in the same conditions as mosquitos - moist warm areas such as bogs or swamps. Many places sell dragonfly nymphs. Some people introduce them into ponds and other areas as a means of natural pest control.

I hope this answers your question.
