Many, many rivers flow South to North from headwaters to delta, and most
rivers have at least one leg or bend that flows northward. It is
unfortunate that most map and globes depict North as "up", since this gives
the incorrect impression that rivers flow South because that is "downhill".
Here is a list, by continent, of the longer rivers that flow South to
North:
- In Africa:
- The nile, the longest river in the world, flows North into the
Mediterranean.
- In Asia:
- The Lena and the Yenisey flow through Siberia into the Arctic Ocean.
- In Europe:
- The Rhine, Elba, Oder, and Vistula flow mostly northward through
Germany and Poland.
- In North America:
- The Athabasca and Mackenzie rivers flow North through Canada.
- In South America:
- The Araguaia, Xingu, Tapajos, and over two thirds of the rivers of
Brazil and Bolivia flow North through the Amazon rainforest.
Next time you see a globe or a map of the world, look at the northern
shores of the continents. You may be surprised how many rivers you can
find that flow from South to North.
