There are many examples of overpopulation and disease. I assume by overpopulation you mean closeness of proximity, etc. Given that you are in New York, the most obvious example and which is relevant would be that of tuberculosis which is now endemic in the Big Apple (because of the number of people and the decline in vaccination). On a smaller scale, you could use the examples of concentration and refugee camps where cholera can become a problem. On an even smaller scale, you could use the example of headlice (perhaps common cold would be a better example) in a closed off class room, where transmission is very common given they are all within a small enclosed area in closs proximity and the ease of transmission. Disease is an obvious one but other problems could include food shortage eg Africa (though the drought hasn't helped), cost of living and resulting socio-economic impact eg increase in homelessness, crime. One very good way to demonstrate all of this of course, if you have teenage kids is to get the game Sim City. Set up a really good city, overpopulate it, and voila, the kids get to experience the problems first hand :-)
