Baking soda is effective on fires, especially grease fires in the home in a frying pan or in the oven due to the fact that it simply smothers the fire by effectively cutting it off from its' vital source of life, namely the oxygen in the atmosphere. It also may render a bit of a cooling, which helps to extinguish the fire also. There is nothing magical in its chemical properties aside from the fact that it is not flammable.
