Subject: What is the difference between shrimp and prawns?

Many think the difference between shrimp and prawns is the size with prawns 
just big shrimps.  I remember reading somewhere that (could be the reverse) 
that prawns are freshwater while shrimps live in saltwater or brakish water.  I 
also notice prawns have claws while shrimps do not, but this may just be 
species dependent.

What is the scientific difference(s) between shrimp and prawn?  Thanks in 
advance.
