I have a kit bought at a coal mine in PA that has a recipe for growing a
crystal garden from coal. The recipe ingredients are coal, water, salt,
ammonia, laundry bluing, and food coloring. The instruction sheet says to place
3-4 pieces of coal in a bowl, mix the remaining ingredients, then pour them
over the coal. As the liquid is absorbed, crystals will form. How does this
work?
