It might sound like the roar of the ocean, but what you are actually 
hearing is the sound of the blood moving through the blood vessels in your
ear, echoing through the shell.  You can hear the same thing if you cup
your hand to your ear, and you won't run the risk of having a hermit crab
nip you.
