I not sure I understand what the questioner is concerned about. Are they asking if Hodgkins will affect other people living in the environment of the patient (ie is it infectious), or are they asking if someone who has Hodgkins could survive without treatment? There is no evidence to suggest that Hodgkins disease is infectious. Although some epidemiological studies show clusters of disease, no studies have given evidence of disease transmission. The behavior of the disease if left untreated is one that ultimately will result in the death of the patient as the lymphatic system is progressively taken over by the pleomorphic but characteristic cellular infiltrate. Many theories exist to explain Hodgkins pathogenesis but most see the "reticular" cells (Reed Sternberg Cells) as important controlling factors in its progression. Radiation and Chemotherapeutic Regimens have been developed that cause disease remission and improve survival to very good percentages.
