Well, it does all those things the same way, and that is by acting as a 
mild polishing agent.  Toothpastes contain mild abrasives that remove 
bacteria, tartar and food from the gums and dental surfaces.  It is the 
bacteria that cause tooth decay as well.  By removing both the agent 
(bacteria) and its food source tooth paste helps prevent tooth decay, the 
formation as tartar, and scrubs your teeth clean.
