Hi there!
You are right about the red contact lenses. There is a firm that markets 
little red contact lenses to the egg layer industry. However, the reason 
relates indirectly to egg production. Egg layers can become aggressive 
towards each other and they tend to be white birds with red combs and 
wattles (on head and chin). If the birds get aggressive - they tend to peck 
each other on the red areas -- then if they bleed - they peck even more..
What the red lenses do is keep them from pecking at the red areas -- 
because it all looks the same. There are varying responses as to whether 
they actually work.
