Dear Rich:

Thanks for your question.
I will begin by saying that there are many different types of glass and
that each of them has different mechanical, optical and thermal properties.
For a nice introduction to glass technology, you could visit the Corning
Museum of Glass website:
 http://www.cmog.org/page.cfm?page=311

In the very nice and very useful website of Mindrum Precision Inc, there
is a lot of information regarding the thermal properties of several
glasses. The melting point is the temperature at which glass is liquid,
the softening point is the temperature at which the glass could be worked
(as in glass blowing), and the annealing point is the temperature at which
the internal strains are relieved.

Finally, for a somewhat more technical discussion about glass properties,
you could consult the Schott Glass Technologies Inc webpage http://www.schottglasste
ch.com/zerodur2.htm

Depending on the temperature you are interested, you may need to use a
oxygen-natural gas torch or oxygen-acetylene torch.

I hope this helps

Regards

Jaime Valencia
