Black squirrels are probably fox squirrels (Sciurus niger), which can appear in many different coat colors. More common gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) can sometimes have black fur as well. The difference between these two is that fox squirrels usually have a buff or orange-colored underside, where gray squirrels have a white, light gray, or occasionally brownish underside. Both species are found in the eastern United States: draw a line from about Minnesota down to Texas, and most fox and gray squirrels will be to the east of that line (though fox squirrels can be found in Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado as well). Gray squirrels are found almost everywhere in the US to the east of that line; fox squirrels are found everywhere except northern New England and southernmost Florida.
