Washing soda is sodium carbonate. According to the Merck Index,
washing soda specifically refers to sodium carbonate decahydrate,
which is crystaline when kept in an airtight container, but will
effloresce, or become a powder, upon exposure to the atmosphere.
Washing soda is also known as sal soda.
