Dear Roger,

Brain tanning is not something we know much about. The North American
Indians used the process to preserve skins and in the UK we have done some
work on deer skins. Ironically, I was recently sent a book called "Deerskin
into Buckskins": How to Tan with natural materials. And would you believe
it uses brains and smoke as the two main tanning agents. This book is from
the USA and the details are as follows:

Title: Deerskins into Buckskins - How to tan with natural materials
Author: Matt Richards
LC: 97-93709
ISBN: 0-9658672-0-X
Pages: 168, 5 3/8 x 8 3/8
Price: $14.95 plus $2 shipping
Address: Backcountry Publishing, PO Box 1666, Cave Junction, Oregon OR97523

I have a copy of the book here which I really don't want. If you wish I'll
send you this copy. Please let me know if you want it and I'll mail it to
the above address. My E-Mail: Graham@sltc.org

Hope this is OK

Regards
