Dear Monica,

There are many different types of phobias.  A phobia is an unnatural fear 
of a harmless thing.  Brontophobia is the fear of thunder or other loud 
noises, such as a gunshot.  Probably the best technique I would advise is 
positive reinforcement.  Comfort the dog, talk to him, play with him and 
otherwise divert him, much as you would do for a young child.  Medicating 
may be an alternative for a severly neurotic animal, but that would only 
be used as a last resort.
