I have seen several student projects that have involved microwave effects on
seed germination but don't know of any research on the subject. Treating seeds
with microwaves is not used by commercial greenhouses, nurseries, foresters,
and farmers as far as I know. You named the main environmental factors in seed
germination. Light can either be required for germination, inhibit germination,
or have no effect depending on the species. Water and optimal temperature are
required. Most seeds also require oxygen to sprout. Factors that can prevent
germination include high salt content, radiation, hard seed coats, immature
embryos, and chemical inhibitors in the seed.
