The formula mass of any compound or element is the sum of the atomic masses of
the atoms in the formula. For example, the formula mass of CaCl2 is
40.08 (Ca) plus twice 35.45 (Cl), or 110.98; that of Br2 is twice
79.904, or 159.81.
The molar mass of any compound or element is its formula mass in grams, or the "gram formula mass." |
