Carbon has been known since well before recorded history. Consequently, no one 
can be credited with the discovery of carbon. At some point, it must have been 
recognized as an element, but that information is obscure, and, to be honest, 
uninteresting.

The word carbon is from a Latin root word carbo, which refers to coal or 
charcoal.
