Carbon has been known since well before recorded history. Consequently, no one can be credited with the discovery of carbon. At some point, it must have been recognized as an element, but that information is obscure, and, to be honest, uninteresting. The word carbon is from a Latin root word carbo, which refers to coal or charcoal.
