Well, Pete, the answer is simple: A magnet will pick up coins made from nickel and other ferrous materials.

U.S. coins do not contain any ferrous materials.

Canadian 5c pieces of 1944-45 and 1951-1954 were made of nickel-plated steel with a surface plating of chromium. Later 5c pieces were made of nickel and chromium. The dimes also contain nickel.

There are lots of good coin websites out there! Check out the websites for the Royal Canadian Mint, and for the United States Mint.

Both have good links to help you in your discoveries!
