I wonder if anyone can tell me briefly the pragmatics of
nuclear waste disposal? I read a Scientific American article
from 1972 which referred to deep burial of waste in glass
cylinders after a five-to-ten year period so that they would
cool, reducing the risks associated with the practice. What
I'd like to know if, how/where is it stored in the meantime?
What precautions are taken against injury to power plant
workers, since unprotected exposure to a cylinder containing
a year's waste for ten minutes has a 50% chance of causing
death? Have there been any significant changes to practice
since that article? Freely admit this is a personal interest
qu and not a school-related thing; but I'd love to know. Thanx!
