I just happened to know a friend who did his graduate work on issues
of magnetic computer media, so I referred this question to him. In

Technology Alliance includes a section on Media
Stability. It includes several technical reports which address the
questions you raise. They've done a nice job presenting the information,
and they know more about the details of this topic than I do, so I refer
