Subject: What is the difference between an ethyl and a methyl?

I am having some trouble expanding organic chemistry formulas.
Could you please explane to me how you know how many Carbons to
attach to the chain. When do I add prefixes(di, tri, tetra)
incront of the Carbon chain(butane, hexane etc...)
