Yes, there are excellent scientists who do believe what is written in the Bible (see this answer). In many ways it is a matter of interpretation. The discussion is rather technical, and would take more space than I have here. But I do recommend that you spend some time with Steve Schimmrich's excellent Science-and-Christianity site (moving soon); you might also check out my poor effort, which maintains an up-to-date link to Steve's site.
