Subject: Where can I find information about emergent properties?

By "emergent properties" I mean the new properties that come into 
existence when moving from one level of organization to another: 
from elementary particles to elements to inorganic molecules to 
organic molecules to living things to consciousness. It seems to 
me that there is a discontinuity at each level with the new 
properties being impossible to predict from the previous level. 

I have searched your archives but have found nothing relevant 
using the keywords I could think of.

I don't expect an explanation of this phenomenon but I would 
appreciate any leads you can provide to published material on the 
subject.
