It doesn't. It hangs in a curve defined by a COSH function (e^x+e^-x)/2. 
Elemental proofs can be found in most applied math books. I am based in 
England. We would expect to find a proof in books aimed at 16-18 year olds.

You can analyse it by assuming the tension is constant in the cable and 
proceeding from there. Your method will almost work. It would take the 
satisfaction away if I told you exactly how to do it !
