Subject: Why does all the way through your shoulder when your neck hurts

I sometimes have a "crick" in my neck, it goes all the way down to below 
my right shoulder.  It lasts for days weeks sometimes, but then works 
itself out.  Why does it hurt all the way down and what causes a "crick" 
to begin with?
