Hmmmmmmm.... It sounds like you have already looked into this quite extensively and have pretty much all the info you need, at least from a technical standpoint. I have found from experience that simple approaches and answers work best. Take a walk through the football trainer's room when the team is getting ready for practice and again when they are through (preferably after a hard mid-week practice). What you see will give you the practical answer. They do what works... In medicine (my specialty) we ice most acute injuries switching to heat after 72 to 96 hours. The same principle applies to preparing muscle for use. Warm it up, slowly cool it down (particularly if some significant inflamation has occurred.)
