In my adult ed. chemistry class we used tert-butyl alcohol and HCl acid
to produce tert-butyl chloride. We used sodium bicarbonate solution to
wash/neutralize the final product. What would be created if the
bicarbonate was replaced with a 50% solution of NaOH? Would that produce
isobutylene?
