…Indeed you are composting. As you have noticed  moisture content and 
temperature can effect this process.  Moisture content is in fact one of 
the most important factors along with the carbon to nitrogen ratio.  If 
you go to http://www.cfe.cornell.edu/compost/microorg.html there is some 
great material on composting.  You might want to look at the student 
project sections for further projects on composting.  
There is also a good site at http://www.compost.org/AboutComposting.htm .  
Composting is natures perfect recycler.   I myself compost and as with 
most of my projects it has ballooned into mountains..  I composted 800 
cubic yards of leaves last year…Need some compost?…Mark
