Dear Daisy,

There are no known or documented clinical symptoms or diseases associated with reduced function of the adrenal medulla and it’s production of catecholamines. If the adrenal glands have to be removed for some legitimate reason, there must be exogenous replacement of the glucocorticoid compound, cortisol, and either appropriate adjustment in sodium intake or replacement of the mineralocorticoid, aldosterone. No replacement of epinephrine, norepinephrine, or dopamine need be considered. I think the calmness of many criminals while they are committing their crimes is a learned response. A mother and father work to instill and/or encourage the growth of an internal moral compass and then teach a child to listen and respond appropriately within this moral framework. When this process is aborted, misguided, or twisted improperly, a person can engage in what most people would consider shocking acts of violence and be as cold as ice throughout. Certainly they do not have the normal release of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla but I think that they develop control of this function [by either active (teaching) or passive (omission) processes] rather than having a defect in the system from the "get-go".

Maybe you could do some research on this and get the answer. Good question and keep asking,
Dr. Swanson
