Rock is a very good ground. Lightning will strike it. You can not rely on trees (especially in open areas) to act as protection. Since this is a question about outdoor safety I am not going to try and give you further information as I am not qualified. Please look to reliable resources for safety precautions and procedures to follow when outdoors in a thunderstorm. Best -Rob
