You're right! The activity series was exactly where you wanted to look.
This reaction is an oxidation-reduction between Ni and Ca2+; NO3 is just
a spectator ion (in case you're not familiar with the terminology, that's
an ion which does not participate in the action, it just hangs out and "spectates"
the reaction). At any rate, Ca2+ cannot gain electrons from Ni, as you can
see from the activity series, so no reaction takes place. Hope this helps ...
