Leaves come out of stems at a place called the node. A tree trunk is just
a big stem. Branches also come out of nodes. If a branch grows out of a
node it will have nodes where leaves are attached. If a branch doesn't
develop, leaves may come out of the node and this will look like leaves
coming out of the trunk. Some plants make more plants by forming
"suckers". These look like little plants coming out of the tree trunk.
You can break them off and plant them to make new plants. This was a very
good observation. Are all the trees having leaves growing out of the bark
the same type of tree?
