First of all, please accept my apology for the lateness of this answer. "Quicksand," is actually a zone where there is a sandy/gravelly bottom, and there is a current of water rising up through the sand/gravel. The water current rising through the gravel makes it loosely packed, and makes it easier for things to sink into the sand/gravel. An item that is sinking in this area will continue to sink until it reaches a point where it is prevented from sinking further, that is, the bottom, a reduction too small to travel through, or it finds a point of bouyancy. Depending on the item's density, and the flow of the upward current of the water, an item may in fact resurface at a later time. The Grolier On-Line Encyclopedia has info on this subject. I hope this answered your questions.
