Endospores are formed by bacteria because of the bacteria's genes. Let me explain. Each living creature (from humans to bacteria) has a certain set of genes that are encoded on the organisms DNA. The genes control what the organism looks like. Certain bacteria, like the Clostridium genus and the Bacillus genus contain the necessary genes to form endospores. The other bacteria do not have these genes. Evolutionary speaking, the gram positive bacteria have come from a specific lineage. Over time, certain gram positive bacteria lost the genes that control endospore formation. Others, like the Clostridium and the Bacillus genuses kept these genes, so they are able to form endospores.
