The Mars Rover Sojourner is actually made mainly from commercially available items. There are a few speciality items such as the Solid Silica Aerogel or Sol-Gel used for thermal protection of the electronics, but most of the rover is made from aluminum and other common materials.

That does not mean NASA was unconcerned about introducing something onto Mars. The elements found on Earth are the same as those found on Mars. Therefore the main concern was a biological hitchhiker that could contaminate Mars. To minimize that possibility the rover was assembled and handled in a clean room environment and then sterilized prior to being launched.
