Hi Tricia,

The stomata in cacti are located on the stems where the photosynthesis takes place. Essentially, the process of transpiration is the same except that succulents and cacti tend to keep their stomata closed during the day to conserve water. Unlike cacti and succulents, most plants prefer to keep their stmata open so they can photosynthesise more efficiently.

I should also add that plants exchange materials with the environment through their roots as well as their leaves.
