Ed,
Technically, there is no difference between a speaker and a microphone. By design, a sound can be converted to an electronic impulse by the reverse of the method which turns impulses into sounds. The only visible difference come from designs which are formulated to make one more advantageous than the other. For example, if you take a set of headphones and plug them into the microphone jack on your tape recorder, you can use them as a microphone, but by design, the headset wouldn't give you as much directional pickup as a well designed microphone.
