This is a question that might be answered either way depending on how you look at organic compounds. Rubber is made from organic compounds found in the latex of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and a few other species. Natural rubber ultimately comes from a living plant. However, I would not consider rubber to have been "once alive." Wood, paper, dried flowers, canned fruits and vegetables, frozen fruits and vegetables, I would consider "non-living things once alive" because they consist of dead cells that were once alive. Sugar (from sugar cane), soybean oil and rubber I would not consider to have been alive because they are organic compounds, not entire cells. Reference Hevea brasiliensis:The Rubber Tree
