For a fair comparison, you will need to compare nuts on a weight basis, not a size basis. To measure calories by burning, you would need a bomb calorimeter or the simple method mentioned in the first reference. Search the mad sci archives for lots of answers on calorimeters. You can get calorie values by looking at food labels or from the USDA site listed in the references below. You will need to divide the calories in a serving by the number of grams per serving to get the same units. The USDA site lists kcal units. A kcal is equal to a food calorie. For reference, remember that carbohydrate and protein each contain 4 calories/gram and fat contains 9 calories/gram. A few examples: Peanut (dry roasted, no salt) - 585 kcal per 100 grams = 5.85 calories per gram Black walnut - 618 kcal per 100 grams = 6.18 calories per gram Pecan - 691 kcal per 100 grams = 6.91 calories/gram Look up other kinds of nuts such as almond, beechnut, brazil nut, cashew, chestnut, chinese chestnut, coconut, corn nuts, ginkgo nut, hickorynut, macadamia, pine nut, pistachio, You might also want to compare similar snacks such as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins, popcorn and acorns. If you want some of the lowest calorie/gram foods, look up lettuce or tea, brewed.
