Dear Ginger,
You can answer your question with an ancient astrolabe, a planisphere
or planetarium software. I use SkyChart III from SouthernStars.com to get
the following information.
The central star of Orion's belt, Alnilam, will rise above the
northeastern horizon at 2014 hours EST on Saturday 22 November 2003. It
will arc across the sky and set at 0807 hours EST Sunday morning.
As we proceed counterclockwise (when viewed from above the north pole)
in our orbit around the sun, Orion will rise and set earlier and earlier:
Rise Set
1804 Dec. 25 0557 Dec. 26
1603 Jan. 25 2004 0367 Jan. 26
1401 Feb. 25 0154 Feb. 26
...
Finally by May Orion is rising in the morning and setting before night.
For links to internet sites with software and other information, check out
graaa.org of the Grand Rapids Amateur Astronomical Association. Ask your
librarian for a copy of H. A. Rey's "The Stars". Bookstores will probably
have planispheres available.
Clear skies!
