You are correct about the popping sound.  You should also be aware of the 
blue flash associated with the breaking of the filament as a spark
usually tries to bridge the gap caused by the sudden break in
the circuit.  A good analogy would be the thunder associated with
lightning.  Sometimes you can even hear a glassy clanking sound as
parts of the filament fly out and strike the inner
surface of the light bulb.
