Hi Nate

The scheme that is used by the military is your idea, except the globes
are
virtual globes, produced by electronic means.

They take two loop antennae, mounted at right angles (or three at 120
degrees
is better) and using very fast diodes (Schottky diodes) SWITCH reception
rapidly and cyclically in sequence from one to the other. This SIMULATES
a rotating loop but with no moving parts.

I see no reason why you could not yourself have, or learn, the skills to
build such a direction finder.
See Direction finder synthetic loop antenna in Google.

Good luck!

John
