It is possible to measure the amount of photons (particles of light) your patch of garden receives, using a photometer (which detects photon intensity). See here for a better definition.

So, using one of these, it is possible to infer the amount of sunlight in your patch of garden using the following formula:

Intensity = Amount of photons/time elapsed

As you can see, the intensity depends on how long the light is measured and how many photons are detected, the shorter the time for a given amount, the lower the intensity.

That intensity is how much sunlight your garden patch has received.
