Yes, the electric field does have a physical significance in space. It
carries momentum and energy; this can be demonstrated when it interacts
with matter. If it had no physical presence, it could not transfer momentum
or energy.

The electric field does not have mass, but this does not mean that it is
not physical or that it does not exist.
