You are correct; they are the same thing.

Let’s break the words down; the suffix ology means “the study of” any word put in front of ology means the study of whatever word is in the prefix. Equine comes from the species biological name for horses: Equus caballus. Equus and caballus are Latin words for horse. Hippos is the Greek word for horse. Therefore, they both mean the same thing. The term equineology is not typically used to describe the study of the horse.
