Hi there,

I think this question is difficult to answer if you are thinking in general terms. That is, when asking if any gases present in the water will be able to reduce water pollution, if such gases existed, then we would not have to worry about water pollution up to certain levels.

However, chlorine gas (in its liquid form) has been used to clean and get rid of pollutants from water and this is know to be a very good disinfectant.

The best example is its use in swimming pools and drinking water systems; you might have heard of chlorinated drinking water.

You can read more about chlorine gas and its utilities here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorine

I hope this helps!

Regards,
Shashank
