According to Bailey, Amaryllis is "a classical name, applied to a woman by early writers." The flowering bulbs commonly sold at Christmas for forcing in homes have the common name Amaryllis but are actually in the genus Hippeastrum. Reference Bailey, L.H. 1977. Manual of Cultivated Plants. New York: Macmillan.
