The generalization is that monocots have parallel leaf venation and dicots have
net venation, also called reticulate venation. However, like many
generalizations, there are exceptions. Leaves in the monocot genus Anthurium
and Dioscoreales have net venation. What appear to be leaves with parallel
venation in the dicot genus Acacia are actually phyllodes or flattened petioles.

Many monocots do not strictly have parallel venation so some botanists prefer
the term striate venation to parallel venation. Monocot leaves can be
longitudinal-striate (same as parallel venation) or pinnate-striate, in which
it appears there is a large central vein with smaller veins branching from it
as in the prayer plant (Maranta species) among others.
