I have been told that "down under", in the southern hemisphere, 
whirlpools (such as in a toilet) spin the opposite of in the northern 
hemisphere.  First of all, is this true?

If this is a fact, then what direction do whirlpools spin at the 
equator, halfway between the hemispheres?
